A Happy View Year

THE last time I met Kyle Falconer, lead singer in Dundee rock sensations The View, he'd managed to wrap up the story of his life thus far in under 15 minutes. Bored of having his picture taken after two minutes, he then bolted for home via the back gardens of his housing estate; the black, curly mop-top finally disappearing behind a sturdy privet.

That was four months ago, also two hit singles, 80 gigs, innumerable beers and interminable games of I-Spy ago. But it's just as well I don't now expect - or want - him to be slick and glib and blasé about the troubadour's life, because that's the length of the Tay from what I get.

I'm lucky to get Falconer at all. At a Boxing Day party, he was "bouncing aff the walls, delirious, couldnae see", and for once his disoriented state wasn't self-inflicted.

He was rushed to Dundee's Ninewells Hospital, where pneumonia was diagnosed and he was placed on a drip. The View's Hogmanay gig in Glasgow was suddenly in doubt, and beyond that their storming of America.

But they build 'em tough in Dundee. Two days later, I'm being driven by the band's manager, Grant Dickson, to Falconer's sister's house, where he has been recuperating. "Kyle must be 80% proof. The bugs didn't stand a chance," says Dickson, who's witnessed The View's toe-rag hedonism close up.

Then sis phones to say he's escaped. A New York Times journalist, intrigued by the hot new young sound-of-the-schemes coming out of Dundee, had to be turned back at the airport when illness struck, and Dickson fears he'll have to send me home as well. For whatever Falconer had, the other three have now got.

Finally the elusive frontman calls in. He's in the Park House Hotel, close to the Dryburgh estate where the band all live, the subject of so many of their songs. "Grant gave me a binbag full of DVDs but I just got bored with them," he explains. "Plus, my sister was doing my heid in."

Kyle Falconer doesn't look much like a rock star. He barely looks old enough to be in this lounge bar. A hoodie compresses his curls; the jeans are faded black and skinny. Espadrilles without socks complete the look - very "Dundee in December". He's 19 but could pass for any of the younger kids kicking about in the Wellgate shopping centre - that funny age when you're bored with Christmas and more excited by Hogmanay.

Drummer Steve Morrison - "Crazy Mo" - was 20 yesterday and now joins the veteran class shared by guitarist Pete Reilly and bassist Kieran Webster. While the others rest up, Falconer looks back on the last year, and ahead to the release of The View's hotly anticipated debut album.

"When we last saw you, none of us had been away from home for any length of time, and we were just about to start our tour," he says between slurps of orange juice. "It just got bigger and bigger and madder and crazier. We played places in Wales where all we could see in the first few rows were faces frae Dundee. We were so late for a show at the Brixton Academy we had to slug our voddy as we ran frae the bus to the stage.

"We supported Primal Scream. By the end of those dates, Bobby Gillespie [lead singer, hellraiser of some discernment] gave up his fancy hotels and moved in with us in the Travelodges. We played Japan with the Ordinary Boys and when me and Kieran stage-dived during their set, the crowd parted and we fell on our faces! As we're lying on the ground all these Japanese girls are taking pictures of us and Preston [lead singer, used to being usurped by Scots, eg George Galloway] breaks off and says: 'That'll be The View then'. That'll be The View then. As slogans go, it's not as good as "The View, The View, The View are on fire!" This football chant echoed around sweaty halls as the fervour grew and more and more fans began singing along to teen-angst anthems they couldn't yet play on their iPods but which they'd already claimed as their own.

"We've played places we didn't know existed," says Falconer. Such as? "Aldershot! Actually, that was a crap gig, but Japan was Beatlesque. We were chased up the street in Tokyo by these screaming girls all with really rare EPs folk in Dundee haven't even got."

The album is called Hats Off To The Buskers. It was produced by Owen Morris, best known for turning the amps up to 11 for The View's heroes, Oasis. Already Falconer admits it's out of date.

"We recorded it ages ago," he says, which for a 19-year-old translates as seven months ago. "By the end of the tour we were playing the songs so fast we almost didnae recognise them. But we're really happy with it. It's who we are and where we're frae."

Among its 14 numbers, 'Gran's For Tea' namechecks Dundee ("There's a mile-long queue at the chippy/I wish I was at my gran's for tea") and 'The Don' goes even further and references the Dryburgh shops which have become a Mecca for their more anoraky fans. There is now no shortage of opportunistic nine-year-olds willing to show tourists where the band live for the price of two cans of fizz.

Other songs centre on boredom, bevvying, dropping Es, stealing cars, fighting with "posh boys", wearing the same jeans for four days on the trot and how, when you grow up in Dryburgh, a good trade and a "house in the [Broughty] Ferry" must be the ultimate of your ambitions. Unless you're The View.

'The Don' is about the band's mate, Marco. 'Face For Radio' is about their friend Clarkie. And 'Claudia'? "That's about a girl I met," says Falconer, "although that's no' her name. Claudia is my dog, one of the Magic Roundabout kind."

So, groupies. Do The View have any? Falconer blushes. "Kind o'." Back in Dundee, his mother has to field phone calls from "randoms, girls I must have gi'en my number to when I was drunk". But he has a girlfriend. For Christmas, she gave him an accordion. "It's really ancient, like." How old? "1960s."

Do their parents worry about them? "Aye, they must. But I'm sure they would rather this than being on the dole." He says the others are already talking about moving away from Dundee, but he's staying put. "What would be the point in buying a flat in London when we're aye on the road? It would be a waste of money."

Let London come to The View. One English broadsheet profiling the band couldn't resist this jibe: "The wider world hasn't seen such ill-looking Scottish boys since the Jesus and Mary Chain." The piece went on to dub the band "the Bash Street Kids on Ecstasy". Still, at least the paper had done its homework on Dundee's pop-culture heritage.

You do wonder, though, what anyone beyond Dundee makes of a chorus (for the debut single 'Wasted Little DJs') which goes: "Astedwae ittlae ejaysdae..." I have to have it explained to me. It's the song's title in a Dundonian version of Pig Latin which the band use as a secret language.

For ultra-secret business, The View mix the Pig Latin with Egg. But their mums didn't sail up the Tay in a banana skin. They've cracked the code. Just the other day, from a kitchen in deepest Dryburgh, the chilling cry rang out: "I ken what bloody 'wegg' is - weed!"

There is no real secret to The View's appeal. It's a joyful collision between a desperate music scene already verging on being bored with the Arctic Monkeys and four young Scots with local colour to burn.

Falconer is not daft. He knows his band are being hyped something terrible and admits this worries him. "But what can you do?" he says. "Once the momentum builds you cannae stop it. You've just got to hope that you're good enough to outrun it."

On 'Same Jeans', Falconer sings: "You'd be amazed at what you can achieve in a year." The View have already done so much. Famous for jute, jam and journalism, Dundee hasn't been notable for jingle-jangle since the heady days of The Associates. The Dundee Courier has even cleared its front page for them in 2006, and that's no mean feat. Their 2007 will begin properly in New York.

"I cannae wait," says Falconer of the short American visit which also takes in Los Angeles and San Francisco. "I've aye wanted to go to New York. I wasn't brave enough to try sushi in Tokyo, but as soon as I get to Manhattan I'm going to hit the streets and order a hot dog and three pretzels from the first vendor I meet."

Falconer is getting hungry and says he must be going. "Sister's for tea." That's a full 40 minutes he's lasted this time. He's just an old, bloated, washed-up rock pig.

The View play Glasgow's Hogmanay in George Square tonight. The single 'Same Jeans' is released on January 15. Hats Off To The Buskers (1965 Records) is out on January 22

Glasgow Hogmanay event cancelled

Glasgow's Hogmanay celebrations in the city's George Square and Stirling's New Year event have been cancelled.
Glasgow organisers said they had been monitoring wind speeds in the square and gusts were reaching up to 70mph.

A spokesman for Glasgow City Council said barriers were being blown over and this meant they could not ensure public safety.

It is the first time Glasgow has cancelled its outdoor New Year party, which was to due to include fireworks.

About 25,000 revellers were expected to see in the New Year at the event, which was to feature The Fratellis, Sandi Thom and The View.

However, party-goers have been urged to stay away.

The View looks better after illness

THE VIEW look like being able to perform at Glasgow’s Hogmanay show in George Square despite all four band members having been struck down by illness over the past few days, writes Rocktalk reporter Alan Wilson.

Lead singer Kyle Falconer was taken into hospital on Tuesday suffering from pneumonia, and in the following days the other three—Steve Morrison, Kieren Webster and Pete Reilly—all fell ill, sparking fears they had contracted the same illness.

However, band manager Grant Dickson last night said the good news is they were only feeling the effects of heavy flu, aches and pains and are already on the mend.

“They’ll be all right for Sunday,” Grant said.

“Kyle is out of hospital and will obviously have to take things a bit easier for the next wee while, but the others should all be back to full fitness by then.

“They’ve got a hectic schedule ahead so a couple of days in bed won’t have done them any harm.”

The View were forced to cancel their headline slot at The Courier’s Rocktalk Dundee Showcase gig at Yuppies nightclub on Thursday night and last night Grant apologised on their behalf.

“They all wanted to play and they never like to miss a party,” he said.

“They are sorry for all their fans who wanted to see them playing in Dundee one last time before the single and album come out next month.”

Despite The View’s non-appearance, the Rocktalk gig was a huge success, with around 700 people attending.

Those who bought tickets to see the band but did not go to the event because of their withdrawal have until January 13 to claim a refund from Groucho’s music shop in Dundee.

The View fly out early on Monday to America for a short tour.

    Pneumonia floors View lead singer

HIGH-FLYING Dundee band The View have been grounded after lead singer Kyle Falconer (pictured) took ill and was admitted to hospital suffering from pneumonia, writes Rocktalk reporter Alan Wilson.

Kyle (20) took ill on Monday and was sent to bed by his parents. However yesterday it became apparent he was becoming worse and he was taken to the doctor, who arranged for him to go to hospital.

His uncle Mike Knight said last night, “He wasn’t very well on Christmas Day, he spent most of the time in his bed and just made an odd appearance.

“His sister took him to the doctor this morning and he said he’d better go up to Ninewells.

“He was getting x-rays and being checked out and he’ll be kept in overnight.

“I think he’s just really exhausted, they’ve been touring for a long time and he just needs a break.

“Obviously he’s got pneumonia so you have to take care but he should be fine if he takes it easy.”

Band manager Grant Dickson said last night, “He was obviously unwell and we hope he makes a speedy recovery.”

The band may now have to cancel their immediate itinerary, including the Rocktalk Dundee Showcase gig at Yuppies tomorrow, followed by their Hogmanay show at George Square in Glasgow.

They are also due to fly out to America at the start of next year for a few shows in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

“We’ll just have to wait and see how long it takes him to get back to full health,” Grant added.

“The rest of the band will be going on Thursday so they might do an acoustic thing or jam with some of the other musicians.”

The band’s new single Same Jeans is due for release on January 15, followed a week later by their debut album Hats Off To The Buskers.

    View to a thrill

...A more credible alternative for fresh new talent in the country is Dundonian quartet The View, an obstreperous bunch of archetypal indie scruffs who will be singing about not changing their jeans for four days and other kitchen-sink concerns in the immediate run-up to the bells in Glasgow.

In the past, no-one would have let these toerags anywhere near a Hogmanay hoolie - or, indeed the charts - but in these Arctic Monkeys-dominated, post-Libertines, post-post-Oasis days of the indie mainstream, their rough-and-ready rabble has gained them speedy recognition as Dundee's most significant musical export since The Associates and the Average White Band.

Backstage at the SECC, prior to one of their biggest gigs yet, supporting Primal Scream, all the band are present - some in body more than spirit. While guitarist Pete Reilly and singing bassist Kieren Webster chatter away enthusiastically (Webster breaking all speed-talking records along with way) about the band's steep ascent of the last few months, drummer Steve Morrison languishes in the corner, chipping in the odd comment, and frontman Kyle Falconer barely averts his gaze from his mobile phone.

The foursome have all known each other since primary school - in some cases, even longer. They all look way too young to have been playing music together for over five years - Falconer in particular looks like he got lost on a school trip and has stumbled in through the wrong door - but are, in fact, all staggering into their twenties as veterans of an Oasis/Beatles covers band called The Lost Weekend.

The quartet made the decision to stop playing covers a couple of years ago and, naming themselves after their local, the Bayview Hotel, rebooted their set with the songs they had been writing for a number of years.

One of these songs, their recent Top 20 hit Superstar Tradesman, was inspired by the mantra, heard at home and school throughout their teens, that they would have to pick a trade if they wanted to find steady employment. "They tell you that you've got no choice, but I'm pretty sure I do," laughs Webster. Against all advice, the foursome had already decided that music was their trade of choice. "That's probably the reason it's going so well for us," says Reilly. "We had to make it work or that's it."

The View's apprenticeship was spent rehearsing and hanging out in the Doghouse - "the best venue in Dundee" the band all agree - where they also played their first gig.

"They'll give anybody a gig," says Webster appreciatively. And a place to crash, it seems. "I'm sure one or other of us slept there," says Reilly. "We stole couches from this place round the corner, called 'Don't Dump It, Gie It To Us' - or something like that. We got settees, chairs and a coffee table from them."

Like a low-rent Monkees, the band radiated an appealing gang unity from the off, and had no difficulty standing out in the local music scene. As Webster puts it: "We're more mentaler".

"And younger as well," adds Reilly. "But nowadays there's loads of young bands in Dundee. People are realising there is talent in Dundee, whereas before they would bypass it and look straight to Glasgow or Aberdeen."

The View can take some credit for turning a spotlight on the city. Their fledgling success has encouraged a ripple effect, while Radio One's decision to stage their One Big Weekend all-dayer there in the summer was a confidence booster, inspiring many fringe events in pubs and venues around the city.

The View have ambivalent feelings towards their hometown, as documented on their forthcoming debut album Hats Off to the Buskers, which they recorded intensively over a two week period in the summer with Oasis/Verve producer Owen Morris.

The Oasisy Streetlights, written after Webster "got jumped", proclaims: "I'd like to move city, I'd like to move town, cos all you ignorant people, you're bringing me down"; while Gran's For Tea communicates a certain homesickness. "I was pissed off with Dundee for a wee while," admits Webster, "but when I was thinking about going awa' fae Dundee, I was also thinking if you were miles away you'd be wishing you were at your gran's for tea."

With tour dates in Japan just completed and the prestigious NME tour and their first US gigs in the new year, The View are having to get used to that feeling. Whenever they do make it home, there is always something else about their Dryburgh neighbourhood which has changed. "Our school's been rebuilt with a huge swimming pool," remarks Webster. "It's like Pimp My School!"

There are also changes back at the immortalised Bayview, from which the boys were apparently banned after an especially raucous gig. "It's under new management," notes Reilly. "So I'm sure we'll be able to go back in..."

    • The View play George Square, Glasgow on Hogmanay and Carling Academy on 1 February. Hats Off to the Buskers is released by 1965 Records on 22 January.

Who's Next? As a certain legendary band once asked. We seek to delve into the music industry and come up with a bountiful collection of stars to be. Or is that just wannabes?

This week we take a look at the next nine bands that will be lighting up 2007.

    The View
The View could quite easily be the biggest band of 2007 if they manage to produce a record that lives up to their early singles.

Superstar Tradesman and Wasted Little DJs are both established indie anthems and manage to sound utterly unique, if somewhat influenced by everything the Libertines ever produced.

The View's album, Hats Off To The Buskers, is released on January 22nd.

    PROUD OF OUR MUSIC

WHAT a brilliant year it's been for Scottish music.

St Andrews' KT Tunstall nominated for a Grammy, Franz Ferdinand's music all over the year's hottest American show, Entourage, Belle & Sebastian selling out the Hollywood Bowl, Mogwai soundtracking the Zidane movie and new bands like The Fratellis, The View and Camera Obscura. And still no record deal for the MacDonald brothers.

On Thursday night, Paolo Nutini played the Glasgow Barras. Some people have compared Paolo to James Blunt, which is like comparing Irn-Bru to Dr Pepper, or Kenny Dalglish to Kevin Keegan. He's in a different league.

It takes place on Thursday, December 28, at Yuppies Live in Ward Road and Rocktalk is delighted to announce that Dundee’s chart heroes, The View, have agreed to headline the multi-band show.

The Dryburgh lads, who are on a promotional tour to Japan just now, were looking forward to putting their feet up and relaxing over Christmas and New Year. . . “The boys are looking forward to some time off over Christmas,” manager Grant Dickson told Rocktalk as they prepared to fly out to Japan on Monday night.

“But as a gesture to the Dundee public, and to Rocktalk for all the support over the past year or so, they all want to play at Yuppies.

“They had a great time at the Rocktalk gig last year and they know it’s a great showcase for local bands, so are delighted to be involved.”

The Rocktalk Dundee Showcase aims to recognise the achievements of local bands who have made some progress over the past year, and there’s no doubt about The View’s credentials for taking part.

Meanwhile, three other Dundee bands, The Law, Luva Anna and Varstraat 66 have also made good strides recently, all of them have signed a deal of some sort, toured and released some great new material. A full preview of the gig will appear in next week’s Rocktalk, with details of all the bands taking part and how they’ve stepped up their game over the past year.

There are still a couple of places on the bill up for grabs and this year Rocktalk is looking to Dundee music fans to help fill the remaining places.

Just some of the bands regularly featured in our listings are Spiral TV, Rising Signs, Sergeant, The Get Downs, Dirty Wee Middens, The Rise, Page 6, Rush Hour Soul, Hanney, Indianapolis, The Unknown, Speyside, Juliet Kilo, Restriction of Liberty, etc.

Those, and others too numerous to mention, could get their chance to feature at the gig through your votes.

We want you to Email in your favourite local band, with the reasons why they should be chosen, with the words Rocktalk Competiton in the subject field to rocktalk@thecourier.co.uk

Remember the bands must play their own, original material and, of course, be based in or around Dundee and be part of the local music scene.

The winning acts will be announced in next week’s column, and the people who nominated them will receive two free tickets to the gig on December 28.

The deadline for entries is midnight on Sunday, December 17, and remember to give your full name and contact details, including a telephone number, when entering. Only one vote per Email address will be accepted.

    The View @ Astoria

"The View! The View! The View are on FIRE!!" shouted the rambunctious sold out crowd as the young Scottish band took the stage last night, fresh off tour with the venerable Primal Scream.

In a triumphant headlining set in their young career, The View are leaders in a wave of new UK indie lad-rock - spiked with sharp wit and a sound a little more rough around the edges than fellow countrymen Franz Ferdinand.

The View ripped through a tight fourty-five minute set of tunes off their upcoming debut album, Hats Off to the Buskers, a series of small glimpses into Northern life, ranging from quick, punky bursts to hand-clapping stompers. Despite the album's release in over a month, the crowd reacted as though these were songs they grew up on for years. The View formed in the backroom of their local pub 100 miles Northeast of Glasgow, in Dundee. It's no surprise as each song is a pint-swilling sing a long.

Songs like "Wasted Little DJ's" and "Wastelands" got the jam-packed dance floor moving in rowdy fashion, as the band played the soundtrack to being sweaty, smokey and buzzed on a Monday night in London. Even the too-cool balcony dwellers with big hair and small jeans danced, sang and swilled through the set.

It should be noted that the band are an average age of 18, an impressive fact considering their confident yet playful set played to such a crowd in London. While still fresh-faced and starry eyed, The View are poised to continue their upward swing in the UK as they release their new single "Sam Jeans" and no doubt set their sites on the States in 2007. It was, however, their debut single "Superstar Tradesman" that blew the doors off as the little ditty became an anthem to the 1500 plus loyal to close the set.

    United Are Still On Fire...

SINCE switching their theme music to local band The View’s hit Superstar Tradesman, Craig Levein’s Dundee United have been refurbished from a derelict group of rogue traders into a team of skilled artisans. Yesterday’s victory over Inverness, their fourth consecutive home win, a feat they have not achieved since 1999, has taken the Tangerines onto level points with Charlie Christie’s side. Levein will not want to hear this, but if Caley can dream of the top six surely United can too?

    Xfm Winter Wonderland Interview

Barely able to make out what they're saying, Matt gets the lowdown from Dryburgh's finest The View on their new album Hats Off To The Buskers, their tour and how much they're looking forward to getting a home-cooked Dundee meal. Much easier to interview when they aren't on fire, thankfully. Although they did experiment with alcohol-fuelled branding - don't try this at home kids.

    The View @ Academy 2

WHEN your website address is www.theviewareonfire.co.uk, performing a live set which is anything other than visceral and intense is simply not an option.

Pleasingly, last night the Dundee quartet lived up to their internet billing by laying on a show that proved why they are on the lips of many a critic.

Signed to James Endeacott’s fledgling 1965 Records, the group’s debut offering Hats Off To The Buskers, hits the shops in January and should be the first big seller of the year.

A new leaf on an esteemed vine of acts Endeacott has helped bring to the attention of the British public in the past, including The Strokes and The Libertines, the Dundonian four-piece are riding the crest of the wave at the moment.

Their producer Owen Morris, famed for his work on Definitely Maybe, has apparently been bestowing them with platitudes, while a slot on NME’s annual university circuit jaunt awaits in February.

A sweaty, hormone-packed ball of hair, the audience appearance mirrors that of singer Kyle Falconer and Co.

Performing in front of a backdrop of images from hometown estate Drybrough, I was keen to see if the had other material equal to the thrilling singles which have been all over the radio in recent months.

    Trainspotting

Dance Into The Night surfing on a killer, pulsating bassline from Kieran Webster, has indie disco anthem stamped all over it, while Skag Trendy would surely have made the Trainspotting soundtrack if it had been penned in 1996 rather than 2006.

And although it was more difficult to pick out similar skiffle-like melodies on Don’t Tell Me and Street Lights, the sheer bluster and bravado they carried them off with meant repeated listens are advisable.

It was debut offering and tribute to pals back home Wasted Little DJs, which kicked things into Oasis-esque football crowd territory though, greeted with a barrage of plastic glass missiles and flying limbs.

Assured set closer Superstar Tradesman, merged jangly Las’ like riffs with the passion of the Libertines at their heady best.

It certainly seems the nation’s teenagers have another band they can believe in – I just hope that when the LP does see the light of day it is worthy of such devotion.

If it is, expect The View to go panoramic in 2007.

    These teens are on fire

It's no wonder some bands can be lukewarm about playing to a London crowd, when often their tour has visited Scotland just a few days beforehand.

Scottish fans are renowned for their passion, their chanting, their affectionate throwing of projectiles - I once exited a gig in Glasgow drenched in more alcohol than a Grand Prix winner.

They worship their own, too. The wave of adoration surrounding Dundee's The View has propelled the teenage quartet to the top of next year's Most Likely list. Last night the constant chants of "The View, The View, The View are on fire!" quickly became infectious.

It was obvious why the lads had been driven to form a band, from the background projections of landmarks in the Dryburgh suburb they call home: a house and a shop. So often the most uninspiring locales inspire the most exciting rock and roll, and this was thrilling stuff.

From the ramshackle punk of violent opener Comin' Down to anthemic closer Superstar Tradesman, they rarely relented unless it was to confuse the crowd with a fake song ending, before bursting back into it with even greater intensity. Their unpolished, high-speed jangle had clear echoes of The Libertines, who were signed by the same record company man, but this band seemed to be having too much fun to throw all this away.

Singer Kyle Falconer's voice was less thin, more raspy than it is on record. Watching him shake his substantial curls was almost as entertaining as the buoyant Kieren Webster, who showed no interest in playing the bassist's usual stage role of third sheep in the Nativity.

Scruffily melodic new songs such as Streetlights and Same Jeans sounded like more hits to join the two they already possess. Playing as well as this, with a fantastic debut album on the way, The View are indeed on fire.

  • Party animal Keiren is a jeans genius on The View's new single

SCOTS pop star Keiren Webster is giving Keith Richards a run for his money as a rock 'n' roll wildman.

The View bassist wrote the Dundee band's brilliant new single Same Jeans after going on a four-day bender. Keiren said: "I ended up at a party in a mate's flat.

"We sat around having a sing-a-long and playing records. At the end of it I was still raring to go and went to a club.

"I had the same clothes on for nearly a week."

The View recently completed a sell-out UK arena tour with fellow Scots Primal Scream.

Keiren said: "We did some partying after gigs but it was difficult to keep up with bass player Mani. I don't think he sleeps."

Same Jeans - out on January 15 - is a taster for the band's impressive debut album Hats Off To The Buskers. Keiren said: "We're really pleased with how it has turned out. It's really live sounding and guitar driven - we didn't want a record which was really polished."

The View - Keiren, Pete Reilly, Kyle Falconer and Steve Morrison - are one of the star attractions of Glasgow's Hogmanay party and will perform for 15,000 fans in George Square.

They also play Glasgow's Carling Academy on February 1 as part of the Shockwaves NME tour. Keiren said: "I love Arctic Monkeys, so maybe the tour can do for us what it did for them."

'Essential Downloads' & 'New to Q' Magazine Features

The View feature heavily in this months editon of Q Magazine.

Q-50 thee essential tracks to download this month
Number 9 - Superstar Tradesman - The View
Much-fancied Scottish tearaways who've taken both the sound of the Libertines and the spirit of early Oasis, and then added a dash of Celtic mischief .

New To Q - The View
    Erstwhile cellmates of Pete Doherty

Last Febuary, The View got arrested. After supporting Babysha, bles, a member of the dundee quartet was a passanger in Pete Doherty's Jaguar when police notices it had been reported stolen (wronghly , as it turned out). Cue a high speed chase thropugh Birmingham.

"They nicked us as Pete took a wrong turn down a one-way street", says drummer Steven Morrison, in his heavy Scottish brogue "We spent a night in the cells."

No charges were brought, but the incident sealed The Views reputation as the ASBO Arctic Monkeys. Slumped backstage at the Forum in north London with hangopver - included scowels glued to their faces, the all under 21 band - completed by singer Kyle Falconer, guitarist Peter Reilly and bassist Kieren Webster give off an air of menace.

They've had plenty of time to hone their gang mentality, not to mention their Libertines influenced guitar racket. All were raised on Dundee's Dryburgh council estate. Metting at a local catholic school, they bonded over a love of Oasis and a desire to make music.

"We used to hang around at night outside the offie" says Webster. "We'd play guitars and wait for the first over 18 to arrive so they could buy us cider"

in 2001 they formed a covers band to supplement their pocket money. The hobby turned serious three years later when Falconer quit his job as a brickie and turned his attention to songwriting. Morrison (butcher), Reilly (joiner) and Webster (pizza takeaway assistant) soon followed suit.

A string of chaotic gigs led to a record deal. Since then, they've cracked the top 20 with single Wasted Litlle DJ's and have just finished recording their debut album with Oasis producer Owen Morris.

"He reckons its one of the best albums he's recorded since definitly Maybe. says FALCONER "I HOPE SO. I DONT WANT TO GO BACK TO BEING A BRICKIE AGAIN"

    Thanks to shedboy for this.
