  • The View Fear Racism Is Spreading

THE View's Kieren Webster has spoken about how he fears racism is spreading throughout Scotland.

The Dundee band have contributed to the new Love Music Hate Racism album alongside stars including Hard-Fi, Maximo Park, Biffy Clyro and Dirty Pretty Things.

Speaking in NME, Kieren said: "Up north there are BNP rallies going on, and what's scary is there are a few people I know whose dads dragged them along."

The British National Party won 53 council seats and commanded seven per cent of the votes polled at the May 2006 elections and came close to winning a seat on the European Council - which would have earned them £2million in public funding.

Kieren continued: "In London, the Love Music Hate Racism shows have been happening for a while but in Dundee, no one knew it existed until we'd done something with it, so it does raise awareness."

The boys have recorded their track Fireworks and Flowers for the compilation, which has only previously been heard as a live track on the B-side of single, Don.

The CD, which is a cover mount on this week's NME magazine, was seen as a response to the BNP's plans to influence schoolchildren by issuing a CD on their label Great White records and distribute it outside the school gates.

Babyshambles' Drew McConnell said: "This stuff is creeping in. Some of it, if people haven't heard a different argument, can sound like common sense.

"They put on a suit and pretend they're respectable politicians."

Bloc Party's Kele Okereke added: "At every juncture it's got to be challenged."

    Pete Doherty Interview

Here is the interview with Ex-Libertines star Pete Doherty as recorded by XFM Scotland. In it Pete recalls the day when Kieren handed him The View's demo CD outside the Babyshambles tour bus in Dundee in 2005. While talking of that now famous first meet, Doherty gives listeners a frighteningly accurate vocal impression of Webster as well and telling of the time he and Crazy Mo were apprehended by the Old Bill in Birmingham.

    Uni date for The View

Dryburgh chart-toppers The View will play Dundee University as part of a short tour of the UK in December (writes Stefan Morkis, Grapevine writer).
The tour, announced today, will bring them to Dundee University on Thursday December 13.
However, the news is not all good for fans. Although non-students will be able to buy tickets, they will need a student to sign them in on the night.

The band have promised to play material they have written for their second album, which is due out next year.

They have chosen to play smaller venues for the tour, which will start at Edinburgh Liquid Rooms on December 2.

Briefs, costing £15 for the Dundee date, went on sale this last week.

Pre-sale tickets have already sold out but more will be available at the students union tomorrow at 9am.

Pete Doherty Tells How He Gave The View Their Break

IF anyone doubted the confidence of The View, a new interview with Pete Doherty will confirm them as the brashest boys ever.

Babyshambles frontman Pete gave the Dundee band their first break when he took them on tour as a support act.
In an interview to be broadcast next week, a pretty coherent Pete, who seems to be doing quite well after his latest bout of rehab, recalls meeting the group in their home town.

He said: "I was just pulling up at the back of the bus outside Fat Sams - I'd run the gauntlet that morning trying to grab a tramp.
"And this kid comes up and says to me 'Pete. I've got a demo here of a band 'n that. Give it a listen. To be honest, I don't really care if you like it or not 'cause we're going to be massive anyway.

"I put it on and said 'I tell you what, If you do sound like that you can play for me.' And they haven't looked back s
    ince.

"We have become mates I suppose. We had time together, eight hours, at a Birmingham police station."
The incident in the police station came about when the bands were touring together and Pete was arrested after a car was stolen. No charges were brought.

Pete puts on his best Dundonian accent to tell the story to XFM's Jim Gellatly for a broadcast on Monday in advance of Babyshambles' Glasgow SECC date.

He adds: "The View are supporting us on December 1. We're looking forward to that,15,000 Scots going mad."
Pete also used the chance to apologise to Aberdeen fans for cancelling gigs in the past. He claims his free online postings are especially targeted at them.

Pete said: "It's a case of people getting what they deserve. The people of Aberdeen for example. I let them down a few times.
"You just don't make it so you just whack the tunes on to the net and then you can't complain then, can you? So it's going back to the fans."

The View will be delighted to support Pete after selling out their small UK tour in just 20 minutes.

They have also posted a demo of a forthcoming song Jimmy's Crazy Conspiracy on www.ryanmcphail.co.uk

Check out Jim Gellatly's interview with Pete on XFM Scotland's X-posure show this Monday just after 10pm.

    View behaving badly

Scots caners The View created a stink when they stuffed duvets down the loos of a luxury apartment.

The Dundee band were filming Channel 4's Ibiza Rocks show when they dreamt up the hilarious plan.

But we're told: "The duvets blocked the entire sewage system and the smell was so bad that The Holloways - who were staying there after them - had to stay on the tour bus for two days while cleaners were drafted in."

The View then decamped to another bus which they promptly left in a "right state" too.
    Hats off, lads...

The View have recorded a special track for a Love Music Hate Racism CD.

The 15-track disc, to be given away free with NME on October 10, came about after it was reported earlier this year that fascist organisations were giving away albums by white power bands outside schools and universities in Britain.

LMHR decided to hit back with a CD of bands prepared to stand up against the racist message and joined forces with NME to get it distributed throughout Britain.

The View play secret show with their Libertines hero

The View, The Kooks, former members of the 747s and Yeti all combined for a gig in London last night.

The bands teamed up for the surprise performances at the new Dharma Bums night at the Strong Room in the east of the city.

The Kooks kicked the evening off as frontman Luke Pritchard - taking tambourine and backing vocals - and guitarist Hugh Harris joined former members of the 747s - Oisin Leech and Massimo Signorelli along with The Basement's Mark McCausland - to play as new band The Weirdos jamming out the likes of 'Rain Kiss' and 'Heavy' for their first ever performance.

They were followed by The View's Kyle Falconer and Pete Reilly who played a short, stripped-down set.

Opening with a cover of Squeeze's 'Up The Junction', the duo had to quickly teach the song to their stand-in bassist, not that they minded, as the man in question was one of their heroes, John Hassell formerly of The Libertines.

The trio then repeated the trick, again winging a version of The Beatles' 'I've Seen A Face' before dashing off.

However, clearly enjoying the evening, Hassell then summoned his Yeti bandmates to the stage for an unscheduled set, which saw them keep the Beatle-esque flavour going with a psychedelic selection of songs including the likes of 'Merry Go Round' and 'In Like With You' before wrapping up the evening.

"The whole philosophy of the evening was to get musicians to come down here and jam," explained organiser and NME writer Kat Lister of the event, adding that everyone who played had got involved just because they wanted to play. "They've not been paid a penny and I think that's an amazing thing."

*Blog Exclusive* The View part from TwoThumbs

The View have reportedly parted company with 2Thumbs management. Looking after the boys from now on will be Tony Perrin and Tim Vigon at Coalition Management who's present clients include the likes of The Music, The Streets, The Zutons, Kevin Rowland and Dexy's, Bloc Party, Fionn Regan, Babel, Engineers, Fields, Kevin Drew, Does It Offend You Yeah!.

    Kyle Spotted

...Finally, back in Camden, Kyle Falconer of The View was hanging around outside the Barfly in the early hours chatting to a member of south-London indie rockers Ratty Rat Rat, who goes by the name of Ratrick Swayze. We're guessing Kyle didn't head back to Ratrick's for a night-cap - he lives in an abandoned toilet factory squat with his band members.
