December gig in Dundee *UPDATE*
The biggest and best live gig of the Dundee festive period, the Rocktalk Dundee Showcase 2006, is officially launched today.
It takes place on Thursday, December 28, at Yuppies Live in Ward Road and Rocktalk is delighted to announce that Dundee’s chart heroes, The View, have agreed to headline the multi-band show.
The Dryburgh lads, who are on a promotional tour to Japan just now, were looking forward to putting their feet up and relaxing over Christmas and New Year. . . “The boys are looking forward to some time off over Christmas,” manager Grant Dickson told Rocktalk as they prepared to fly out to Japan on Monday night.
“But as a gesture to the Dundee public, and to Rocktalk for all the support over the past year or so, they all want to play at Yuppies.
“They had a great time at the Rocktalk gig last year and they know it’s a great showcase for local bands, so are delighted to be involved.”
The Rocktalk Dundee Showcase aims to recognise the achievements of local bands who have made some progress over the past year, and there’s no doubt about The View’s credentials for taking part.
Meanwhile, three other Dundee bands, The Law, Luva Anna and Varstraat 66 have also made good strides recently, all of them have signed a deal of some sort, toured and released some great new material. A full preview of the gig will appear in next week’s Rocktalk, with details of all the bands taking part and how they’ve stepped up their game over the past year.
There are still a couple of places on the bill up for grabs and this year Rocktalk is looking to Dundee music fans to help fill the remaining places.
Just some of the bands regularly featured in our listings are Spiral TV, Rising Signs, Sergeant, The Get Downs, Dirty Wee Middens, The Rise, Page 6, Rush Hour Soul, Hanney, Indianapolis, The Unknown, Speyside, Juliet Kilo, Restriction of Liberty, etc.
Those, and others too numerous to mention, could get their chance to feature at the gig through your votes.
We want you to Email in your favourite local band, with the reasons why they should be chosen, with the words Rocktalk Competiton in the subject field to rocktalk@thecourier.co.uk
Remember the bands must play their own, original material and, of course, be based in or around Dundee and be part of the local music scene.
The winning acts will be announced in next week’s column, and the people who nominated them will receive two free tickets to the gig on December 28.
The deadline for entries is midnight on Sunday, December 17, and remember to give your full name and contact details, including a telephone number, when entering. Only one vote per Email address will be accepted.
