LMHR Roundtable Part 2

The View help band to go up in the world

An unknown Scots band have been hand-picked to tour with one of the UK's hottest groups.

Bishopbriggs-based Hi 5 Alive couldn't believe their luck when The View asked them to open their next Scottish gigs.

Dundee indie rockers The View got their big break thanks to wayward rocker Pete Doherty, who spotted the four-piece busking in their home town and offered them a support slot.

And it seems The View, who scored a top five album with Hats Off To The Buskers, haven't forgotten their roots and are happy to give the same leg up to another young band.

Hi 5 Alive drummer Andy Rhodes, 22, said he and his band mates - guitarist Ryan Diamond, 22, and bassist Richie Bell, 21 - were stunned when The View made the offer - especially since the band only started gigging in February.

He said: "We were playing a show at the Marquee in Dundee and it turned out The View's bassist Keiren Webster was in the crowd.

"Afterwards he came up and told us how much he'd enjoyed the gig - then we couldn't believe it when he asked us to be their support band on their next tour.

"We absolutely jumped at the chance."

Hi 5 Alive, who don't yet have a record deal, will open for The View at their gigs in Edinburgh on Sunday and Dundee on December 13, where they hope to win a legion of new fans.

View bassist Keiren said: "We're really glad to have Hi 5 Alive playing with us. They're a great band who are well worth hearing.

"We like to have local bands play with us, there are so many out there who deserve more of a chance."

Hi 5 Alive will also headline King Tut's on December 21.

Kyle wants to write like Paolo

The View's Kyle Falconer has said he wants to write songs like fellow Scot Paolo Nutini. Backstage he reportedly said: "I wish I could write songs like Paolo. I write all The View's songs with our bassist Kieren - it would be nice to do it on my own sometimes."

The View rock Butlins

Bands including The Twang, The View and Young Knives have taken to Skegness Butlins to play Big Reunion's Twisted Circus festival.

Around 4,000 punters trekked down to the sell-out three-day weekender that saw DJs and bands performing until the early hours.

On Saturday (November 23) Mr Hudson And The Library opened the evening's events followed by !Forward Russia!, who played a host of tracks from their forthcoming second album.

At midnight The View's Kyle Falconer took to the stage with his band sporting a fat top lip - which he revealed he got after a recent fight with a friend - but that didn't stop the foursome getting an already heaving throng dancing and singing along.

Ploughing through tracks from their debut Number One album, including 'Wasted Little DJs' and 'Same Jeans', the Dundonian four-piece were on fine, drunken, form and pulled the largest crowd of the evening.

Next on the bill were Birmingham swagger rockers The Twang, who kept the heaving room full with their chart-bashing lad anthems.

Radio anthem 'Wide Awake' erupted with a huge drunken singalong from the already swaying crowd.

The Young Knives' lead singer Henry had recovered from the cold he was suffering from at London's Union Chapel earlier in the week and, along with brother House Of Lords, kicking off with some trademark banter as the band came on just before 2.30am.

The three-piece played a 30-minute sweat infused set rammed with new tracks from their forthcoming album, including 'Terra Firma' and 'Up All Night', alongside old favourites 'Weekends And Bleak Days' and 'She's Attracted To'.

The Rumble Strips and then Blood Red Shoes finished the night, the last band having the 'graveyard' slot of 4.30am.

    The View/McPhail Guitar Auction

A Gibson guitar designed by Scots artist Ryan McPhail and signed by The View fetched £750 at an auction on Tuesday evening.

As expected a 10ft tall hand-painted Gibson Les Paul replica guitar signed by Sir Paul McCartney became the star attraction of the night. After a competitive bidding war the giant guitar was eventually auctioned off for an amazing £60,000. Sir Paul McCartney said, "I'm really amazed and very happy that the guitar went for so much and for such a great cause."

Gibson Guitartown London is a charity-inspired campaign, bringing the power of music together with art to raise money for Nordoff–Robbins Music Therapy, The Prince’s Trust and Teenage Cancer Trust. Over £200,000 was raised from the sale of the 62 hand painted and signed Gibson guitars which will be split equally between the three charities.

Simon Davies, Chief Executive of Teenage Cancer Trust said "Were delighted to be associated with such a fantastic event. Our sincere thanks go to Gibson Guitars for all their support and hard work - funds raised will make a real difference to the lives of teenagers with cancer across the country."

Nicky Weller Fundraising Manger of Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy said “We are thrilled at Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy with the end result of the auction and our sincere thanks goes out to all involved and everyone who bid on the night”

The Princes Trust, Caroline Wright said “We are delighted with the outcome of the Gibson Guitartown London Charity Auction. The thousands raised will help to change the lives of young people in this country who need our help most.”

The View vs The Mighty Boosh

TV halfwits The Mighty Boosh were asked by the NME to take some questions by some of indie's rocks top stars. Amongst them was The View's very own Kyle Falconer.

Kyle asked Noel Fielding: Noel, why were you being such a prick at the house party in Clapham that we went to with The Zutons? You started taking the piss out of our mate and we all got chased out of the house. Are you always that horrible?

Noel said: "I don't remember that. I remember going to a gig at the Islington Academy and them all being wankers. I was upstairs and someone from Towers Of London said The View were downstairs and they were all being twats. I went down there and nearly had a fight with them because I was so drunk. But I've got nothing against The View. This was my brother Naboo's party, and I wasn't being horrible at all. I didn't know who they were to be honest. I'm one of the nicest people on the planet."

  • American visa blues for U.K. artists

...It seems it's de rigueur now to make it hard for U.K. artists to get in there." In April, British band the View canceled a 10-date North American tour after a Scottish court fined vocalist Kyle Falconer for cocaine possession. Agent Steve Ferguson, who represents the View, Klaxons and the Pipettes at New York-based Paradigm, reports, "Klaxons and the Pipettes are now back, but not the View. It's harder if you've an arrest record." Ferguson adds that acts must allocate more time to visa preparation in the current climate....
