    Meet the Wasted wee DJs

    * Do you girls still do day jobs as well as the Wasted Little DJing? If so, what are they (I think you’re hairdressers cos there is a bit about you in the song offering to cut Kyle’s hair for free?)
Kar: Yeah we’re both hairdressers in Dundee.
Char: Ha ha, we used 2 work in the same shop, till Kar decided to go to T in the Park instead of work... oops!

    * What does it feel like to have a song about you that most of the country can sing off by heart? And now your song (well, the album) is also up for the Nationwide Mercury Prize too? Will you be invited to the award ceremony? Have you been to things like that before with the band?
Char: We better had be invited!
Kar: We went to NME awards with them. That was well good. They wouldn’t have won the award if it wasn’t for us would they… so we had to help them celebrate ;o)

    * How much do you get to see of The View these days?
    K+C: Not very much!

    * Have you become celebs in Dundee? Could you just give us your version of the history of Wasted Little DJs
Char: Well we never saw it as our own club night really. We just kinda organised parties with good music for all our pals to come to where we could DJ too. They were great parties!
Kar: Yea, and we got some good gigs out of it too – its great cos now we are getting booked all over the world. We love it!
Char: We got our name from a Graham Coxon song. We love him and used 2 play him all the time. The lyrics to one of his songs it goes on about a Wasted Little DJ.

    * What’s the best thing about being the Dundee version of Paris and Nicole!?
Char: He he, we run about annoying people and causing lots of trouble.
Kar:... and we usually get away with it.

    * Everybody on English TV and mags etc seems to go on about how hard it is to understand the band’s Dundee accents? Do you find it hard to get people from elsewhere understanding you?
Kar: To be honest we don’t understand Kyle either!
Char: We do try to speak a lot clearer, but we are wee girls aren’t we, so we are more polite
    Kar:... and we’re nicer!

    * What kind of music do you like to play? What should people here expect to hear when you come up to the Inverness date? Or do you want to keep it as a surprise?
Char: Yes, we want to keep it a surprise – but I guess a bit of everything. If you check out our myspace www.myspace.com/wastedlittledjsrock you can see who are our friends and who we are into. Mainly indie though!
Kar: Yeah, mainly indie – with a few surprises thrown in.

    * Where is your favourite place in the world, and where would you like to take your Wasted Little Djs night to? (I know you’ve done loads of places already, so maybe more exotic places, holiday spots, faraway islands... etc!?)
Kar: I’ve never been to America, so I would love to do some gigs over there. I’m not just saying it but I’m sure nowhere in the world will have a crowd like a Scottish crowd. Anyone that has been to a gig in Scotland will know what I mean!
Char: Yeah, Scottish crowds are the best – we are really looking forward to Inverness this week and also to Live at Loch Lomond next week. We are hosting the Rock DJ tents. It’s going to be amazing! We have some concession tickets available via our myspace too! Email us!

    * If you are travelling away from home, is there anything you miss a lot?
Kar: After sleeping in tents and buses the main thing you miss your own bed!

    * What’s the first song you are likely to play in your set?
Char: We never have a set planned. We are quite spontaneous. It also depends on how many drinks we have had! ;o)

    * Say you’ve both got a day free you didn’t expect to get... how would you spend it if money was no object?
Kar: Probably the pub and shopping. In that order.
Char: Yeah, definitely that, but in style! With all our mates!
Kar: Woo limos, and champagne and a chauffeur to take us places.
Char:... and then an after-party in New York if money was no object... and then... haha!

    * Has the success of the Dundee music scene changed the place? Where is your recommended place for people going out in Dundee to head for?
Char: The Doghouse is our favourite hang out.
Kar: Yeah, it’s changed here now. Loads of bands come to play here now and everyone from surrounding cities like Glasgow and Aberdeen are all coming out in Dundee.
Char: We know how to have fun!

    * Would there have been a View if there hadn’t been Wasted Little DJs?
Kar: Yeah there would be The View without us, but their gigs at the beginning wouldn’t have been half the fun without us! We used to be the only ones dancing!
Char: We used to get into trouble back then from their manager for jumping about, until he realised that the record company liked us doing it. Now you find him jumping about to them too.

    * Catch the girls tomorrow at the Ironworks.

THE View cracked the charts with Same Jeans - a song inspired by wearing the same denims after a four-day bender.

Now fellow Dundee rockers The Law hope to follow suit with their new single Still Got Friday To Go - written after a six-week party.

Singer Stuart Purvey said: "We shared a flat with The View. One party went on for six weeks. It only ended when the booze ran out.

"The single is about partying all week before realising we've still got Friday to go."

The Law play the Dunstaffnage Music Festival in Oban on Saturday and Sunday, Live At Loch Lomond - on the Email Stage - on August 4 and T on the Fringe at Edinburgh's Cabaret Voltaire the next day.

'Mercury Music Prize doesn't mean anything to us'

Scottish rockers The View have dismissed the Nationwide Mercury Music Prize as meaningless.

The were speaking after the official announcement of 2007's nominations earlier this week (July 17), when their album 'Hats Off To The Buskers' was confirmed on the shortlist.

"It doesn't really mean anything," declared bassist Kieran Webster. "The album doesn't suddenly get any better or worse. The real accomplishment is when the fans went out and bought it. People have come up to me in Dundee and said, 'I heard your album and started a band'. That's the really big compliment."

Frontman Kyle Falconer seemed similarly un-moved by the award.

"I'd never really heard much about it [the award] until I found out we'd been nominated," he explained, although he chirped up when reminded there's £20,000 in prize money for the winners, declaring,"Great, I'll buy my mum a caravan!"

The band went on to reveal who they were tipping for the award. Falconer is rooting for Jamie T's album, 'Panic Prevention', while Webster is tipping Amy Winehouse's 'Back To Black'.

"She's like the female version of Kyle!" joked Webster. "Spewing on stage, and stuff!"

    More on Libertines Cover

The View are currently recording a cover of The Libertines 'Don't Look Back Into The Sun,' in London.

Speaking at yesterday's Nationwide Mercury Music Prize nominations - where their debut album, 'Hat's Off To The Buskers,' was nominated for best album - the band's bassist Keiren Webster said the band were asked to choose a cover from the turn of the century.

"We're doing a Libertines track for Radio One," said Webster, as he spoke to Gigwise, "it's for the fifty year anniversary. We got asked to do a cover from the early 2000's."

As well as admitting that 'Don't Look Back Into The Sun,' was his favourite Libertines track, Webster also revealed that the band are already thinking about the follow-up to their number one debut LP.

"We've written a lot of the songs, we just need to rehearse and get them recorded. It's just finding the time to do it. I mean, it should be easier now that we've nearly finished gigging this album."

He added: "We're looking forward to getting into the rehearsal room at the end of the year and recording at the start of next year."

What do you think about The View's choice of Libertines song? If you don't agree, why not leave a comment and suggest an alternative?

Scottish rockers The View want to gatecrash the Amy v Arctics battle for the Mercury Music Award.

Guitarist PETER REILLY said: “Some awards are about what you look like but this is just about the music. We really want to win.”

    The View On Mercury Prize

There's always another nominees who you suspect doesn’t really care whether they win or even whether they’re nominated. Step forward Kieran from The View (though the band have started their next album).

Its no surprise to find out that The View have been nominated for a Mercury Music Prize for their debut album ‘Hats Off To The Buskers’ and Xfm caught up with guitarist Kieran to find out that, well, that he’s not really massively arsed about winning.

“We never really thought about it,” he explained, “I don’t really keep an eye on awards ceremonies… or anything. I dunno, it is flattering. It’s good to be nominated I s’pose. I dunno, I s’pose if you’re nominated you’ve got a chance of winning it, but it won’t make the album any better.”

Incidentally, if you want an example of how great we are, listen to the interview, then try to understand what the hell Kieran is talking about, then share our pain as we had to transcribe it. Oh yes.

What’s more, he went on to explain that The View - one of the hardest working bands around for sure – are currently itching to get back into the studio.

“We’ve just started work on some new songs recently. Arranging them and getting them together to do some rehearsals,” he went on. “We’ve not had a rehearsal for so long. We’ve been on the road for ages; all we’ve done is play gigs. It must be coming up to a year since we’ve done any rehearsing.

“It’d be good to get in the rehearsal studio and get all the songs finished. They’re written, but its just getting them played together as a band.

“We’d like to see the new album released maybe Spring next year, or March, about that time next year maybe. We’re eager to get it done, just so we can get some new songs in the set if nothing else, so playing live becomes interesting again.”

The View Respond To Mercury Nomination

The View have spoken to Gigwise this afternoon about their nomination for this years Nationwide Mercury Prize.

As we reported earlier, The View’s debut album ‘Hat’s Off To The Buskers’ is among a list of twelve LP’s that have been short listed for the Best British and Ireland album of the last twelve months at this years awards. Previous winners the Arctic Monkeys and leftfield act Basquiat Strings are amongst the other nominations.

Speaking to Gigwise just after the announcement was made, the band’s bass player Kieren Webster admitted that it was “nice” to be nominated but said that the fans regard for the album was more important.

“I don’t think the reward for the album relies in awards nominations,” said Webster about the accolade. “It’s more the fact that all the fans liked it. It’s nice to be nominated but I wouldn’t say it justifies the album any more. It’s a good album on its own whether it gets nominated for an award or not.”

‘Hat’s Off To The Buskers’ entered the UK charts at number one when it was released in January, capping off a remarkable rise to stardom for the Dundee band.

Webster added that amongst the other nominations, he most admired Fionn Regan, Jamie T and Arctic Monkeys.

The winner of this years Nationwide Mercury Music Prize will be announced at Grosvenor House Hotel in London in September.

    RAR - A CELEBRATION
From 1976 to 1981 a unique cultural-political movement, Rock Against Racism (RAR) – along with a political movement – the Anti Nazi League – successfully united hundreds of thousands - black and white - to stamp out the fascist movement of the day, the National Front. The movement's enduring symbol was the monster 1978 march to and gig in east London's Victoria Park which featured The Clash, Tom Robinson, Steel Pulse, and many more. Next April, RAR's modern-day heirs Love Music Hate Racism will stage a huge "30th Anniversary of Viccy Park" carnival aimed at uniting people today against Britain's contemporary fascists, the BNP, and encouraging people to get out and vote to prevent the BNP winning seats on the Greater London Assembly or adding to their 50 local councillors already elected around the UK.

This celebration, part of the Hackney Empire's "Spice Festival" will bring together an audience of RAR veterans with their young Love Music Hate Racism counterparts, and put on one stage the cream of the punky-reggae generation alongside stars of representing the best of today's "militant entertainment".

    'We're never playing Falkirk again'

A secret gig by The View in the Martell Club, Falkirk descended into chaos on July 4.

Bottles were hurled at the band, a sound-man suffered a cut lip and bassist Kieran Webster launched himself at a heckler.

The Scottish foursome were playing an intimate warm-up show, in preparation for their appearance at the T In The Park festival this weekend (July 6-8).

However the atmosphere turned sour as the crowd began throwing bottles half-way through the band's set.

Front-man Kyle Falconer narrowly avoided a glass bottle to the face, but a sound-man was less fortunate.

He was hit by a bottle, resulting in cuts to his mouth. "There was blood everywhere," a spokesperson for the band told the Daily Record.

As the gig continued Falconer said, pointing to one prominent heckler, "This is the last time we're playing Falkirk. It's because of that dick there we won't be coming back."

Webster followed his bandmate's declaration by mounting a speaker and launching himself at the heckler.

Despite their experience, the band are still set to perform their festival slot this weekend.

T in The Park Part 1

    T Review

...Over on the King Tut’s stage meanwhile, Kyle, Steve, Pete and Kieren were playing the “gig of their lives” in front of 15,000 people.

Belting out all the songs from the debut number one album Hats Off To The Buskers, including their three hit singles, the audience reception was unbelievable.

Right to the back of the packed tent, hands were in the air and people were dancing their socks off, singing along to every word.

The Dryburgh lads, who just over a year ago were still relatively unknown outside of Dundee, rocked the tent with their Dundee street pop-rock which has charmed kids throughout the UK, Europe and Japan.

“I think that was the best gig I’ve ever played,” lead guitarist Pete Reilly said afterwards.

“It was superb, a fantastic experience and I couldn’t believe the size of the crowd in that tent. The noise was unbelievable.

“We’ve played some amazing gigs over the past year but nothing compares with that.

“We all really enjoyed it and it was brilliant for our mates in the crowd, they’ve been fantastic over the past couple of years and to see all those familiar faces every time we play is fantastic. They deserve a lot of the credit for what’s happened to us.”

Sheer emotion in the aftermath of their superb gig struck The Law, with Stuart Purvey, Steve Anderson and brothers Simon and Martin Donald visibly moved by the reaction of the crowd in the T-break stage.

“That was brilliant, better than anything we’ve ever done before,” lead guitarist Steve said. “The best bit was walking on stage. The buzz was unbelievable, fantastic. We had to live up to the hype that’s been building up and we did it. The fans were brilliant.”

The View at T in the Park

THEY were up against The Killers and Brian Wilson, but The View at King Tut’s were the Scottish triumph of the very Scottish T in the Park.

The tent was full to bursting half an hour before the band took the stage just before 10pm. Stewards kept a firm line against those prepared to jump the barriers.

“The View!..” shouted lead singer Kyle Falconer and the crowd duly completed the football-terrace chant which booms out at all their gigs now - “The View, The View, The View are on fire!”

Every song seemed to be faster than the one before. The sound at the back of the arena wasn’t the best and Falconer - a riot of curls and wearing his guitar high on his chest - could only be properly understood between the numbers.

“Chee-urs,” he said “T in the f***in’ Park.”

But no one seemed to mind. The band played “Superstar Tradesman” and others from the debut album, including “Same Jeans” - “The story of our last tour,” said Falconer.

And when they blasted through their debut single “Wasted little DJs” - still their best song - the chorus was a lusty sing-a-long. Considering it’s written in their own special Dundee language, that was pretty impressive.

Hometown heroes at T In The Park

The View played their second gig of the day tonight (July 7), as they headlined the King Tut's Tent at T In The Park.

Having played at Oxegen this morning, the band were treated as returning heroes at T In The Park, located close to their Dundee home.

With an abundance of Scottish flags flying, The View launched into the opener of their debut album, 'Comin' Down', before following up with B-side 'Screamin' 'n' Shoutin''.

Bassist Kieren Webster told the crowd: "This is the best festival in the world, and it's a pleasure to play for you!"

The View performed crowd favourites 'Wasted Little DJs', 'Street Lights' and 'Face For The Radio', with one fan even perilously scaling a tent pole to get a better view.

The T In The Park audience was also treated to a new song, the jaunty 'Fireworks And Flowers', as well as The View's customary cover of Squeeze's 'Up The Junction'.

    The View played:
