Paolo Nutini speaks about new recording

...PAOLO may also appear on Dundee band The View's second album. The two acts were recording at the same Rockfield studios in Monmouth Valley, Wales when the late night/early morning session developed.

But The View's Kyle Falconer claimed in NME that Paolo was "scared" when he took charge, saying: "We kidnapped him and made him sing. I've never seen someone look so scared. I was shouting at him, telling him what to do." (See blog note below)

Paolo admitted he's puzzled at Kyle's comments and reckons if the song is to see the light of day they'll need to record it again - hardly the actions of a man running scared.

He said: "Kyle came to the studio, listened to my new songs and seemed to be buzzing off them.

"Half the time I don't know if it's true, or whether he's said something while in an altered state and can't remember it in the morning.

"I remember doing the song, but we didn't know the words, it was four in the morning when we recorded it and it was a bit hazy."

Before a rematch, Paolo will be back in Scotland for more live dates...

BLOG NOTE: Kyle has asked for it to be cleared up that he never at any point said Paolo was "scared" or that he was "kidnapped" and that all stories from the NME & tabloids quoting on him saying this were completely false. JB

Mo & Kieren at T In The Park

...The sight of Kieren Webster and Steve Morrison of The View dancing about wildly in the crowd showed how much they also enjoyed their good pals’ show.

Afterwards Luva Anna lead singer Dave Webster and guitarist and fellow vocalist Drew Gray were both elated despite admitting to the worst nerves they had ever experienced.

“It was really nerve- racking, but what a feeling, it was a great buzz to walk on the stage and hear the crowd all chanting, it was brilliant,” Drew said.

“The crowd was the best part,” Dave said.

“Hearing them singing your name is a fantastic feeling, that’s never really happened before. It feels like a step-up for us.”

Steve Morrison was delighted for his good friends’ success.

“They were excellent, the crowd was really into them and the vibe was great.”...

Funding to help new local bands

The Dundee recording studio where The View recorded their first demo CD has received official recognition of the part it plays in helping young musicians gain a foothold in the industry.

The Hastie Retreat in Arbroath Road has joined forces with the Scottish Arts Council to offer more young musicians the chance to take their careers to the next stage.

The Scottish Arts Council’s Youth Music Initiative has provided funding to five professional recording studios around the country, including the Hastie Retreat, to enable emerging local bands aged 14-25 to record a high-quality demo.

Nine bands have so far been chosen by local panels, including Forget Yesterday, from Dalgety Bay, and Gems McAdam, from St Andrews.

Fit to Fly, from St Michael’s in Fife, are currently working alongside Hastie Retreat studio engineer and owner, Dundee musician Bill (Willie) Hastie.

“This is a fantastically important scheme for younger bands because recording a demo can be an expensive business,” he said.

“There are lots of very talented young bands out there and getting a demo recorded is absolutely essential if you want to progress.

“The View recorded their first demo here and that’s a great example of why it’s such an important thing to do. They went on to hand their demos out to various venues and management people and look at where they are now.”

Two more bands have still to be chosen to take part in the project and Bill will be talent spotting at local gigs in the coming weeks.

Other projects in development to help young musicians include a scheme to provide free rehearsal spaces and support for the expansion of Glasgow venue King Tut’s Your Sound initiative, which offers young bands the opportunity to play in support of touring acts.

Donald McDonald, Youth Music Manager at the Scottish Arts Council said, “The YMI strongly believes in the importance of nurturing musical interest at grassroots level to ensure budding musicians making music in their bedrooms, youth clubs and garages across Scotland have the opportunity to fulfil their potential.”

    Nutini's View Of Top Duet

THE VIEW claim that fellow Scot Paolo Nutini was scared of them when they recorded a duet together.
The Dundee tearaways invited the singer to lay down a track for their next album when the two acts were working in the same recording studios.

But frontman Kyle Falconer says he bossed poor Paolo around so much during the session, the Paisley boy was a nervous wreck.

Kyle told this week's NME: "We kidnapped him and made him sing. I've never seen someone look so scared. I was shouting at him, telling him what to do. Call me Adolf Falconer."

Although Kyle may be exaggerating slightly, a spokesman for Paolo admitted he was surprised by the View's request to record with him.

He said: "When Paolo was recording at Rockfield studios in Monmouth Valley, The View were in a studio not far away and Kyle turned up one day and invited Paolo to record with him. Paolo's band went with him and all of them, including new Australian artist Liam Gerner, provided moral support."

He added: "The View are all sweethearts."

The track is set to appear on The View's new album with Oasis producer Owen Morris and also features Babyshambles' Drew McConnell on double bass. It is likely to appear towards the end of the year.

ROCK band The View tested their new tracks on Liverpool when they launched a monthly music event for the city.

The Scottish band headlined an intimate gig at Newz Bar and were joined by Liverpool quartet The Grants.

Organisers are hoping the event, Newz Live, will attract big names as well as undiscovered acts.

They have already had interest from Liverpool bands The Coral and The Zutons, Noel Gallagher and Starsailor.

The View, who enjoyed huge success with their chart-topping hits, are working on their second album.

Guitarist Pete Reilly said: “It’s great to be back in Liverpool. We’ve done loads of gigs here but we’ve never performed at Newz before.

“The fans in Liverpool are great. We were approached to do Newz Live and thought it would be a great chance to test some of our new stuff.
“I think the fans will like it, the new songs are much more mature.”

Pete was joined by bandmate Kyle Falconer for a live acoustic performance at the bar on Water Street.

The crowd, which included Hollyoaks actor Kent Riley (Zak), went wild for songs from their debut album Hats Off to the Buskers.

Indie rockers The Grants also got a huge reception.

The launch also featured Catacoustic and DJ Phat Phil Cooper.
