Project Scotland Gig Postponed

Voltage by ProjectScotland on the 6th Oct at the Carling Academy is being rescheduled

Kieren Webster, bass player of The View has broken his hand. Despite hopes that the injury would heal and no performances would be affected, the band has accepted with regret that Kieren will not be fit to play.

We at ProjectScotland apologise for this bad luck, and don’t want you to miss out. So, we’ve decided to keep the line-up of this incredible free event intact and pursue an alternative date. It is hoped that this will be a matter of weeks from the original date.

Father Peter Reilly describes Ölüdeniz and Turkey as ’the sunny side of Scotland.” He says that Scottish and Turkish people are very much alike: ’We have felt a warmth here and we have been spending our holidays in Ölüdeniz for the past ten years in May and September. Our every moment is special and pleasant here.” Peter Reilly said that he met his Scottish friend Richard in Abrah Kebabrah and it turned out that they live in the same city in Scotland: ’When I first saw him, I thought he was Russian, but it turned out that we are from the same city. He is a really good friend of mine now.”

    Superstar Draughtsman

THE street artist behind the cover for Scots rockers The View's bestselling album has a new sideline - flogging shoes to rock stars.

Top chart acts are rushing to order trainers specially inked by former graffiti artist Ryan McPhail.

Clients include Lily Allen, Spice Girl Mel C and indie rockers Dirty Pretty Things.

The 19-year-old's talent was given a global audience when used on the covers of The View's album Hat's Off To The Buskers.

He grew up with the band - singer Kyle Falconer, guitarist Pete Reilly, bassist Kieran Webster and drummer Steve Morrison - in Dundee.

He accompanied them on the road as they shot to fame with tracks such as Superstar Tradesmen, Wasted Little DJs and Same Jeans.

And Ryan - who was once fined for tagging walls in his home city's Hilltown and Dryburgh areas - is thrilled he is now making as much of a mark as his old pals.

He said: "When I was growing up my only artistic outlet was graffiti.

"I'd get into big trouble for tagging walls, and was even fined £100 on one occasion.

"Now I realise there are other ways to express my art and this time I'm getting paid for it.

"The guys in Dirty Pretty Things and Lily Allen love my shoes, which are individual works of art, and I'm busy working on a pair for Lily now.

"Mel C was fascinated by my artwork and my tattoos. I'm also busy with a range of T-shirts.

"I'd describe the designs as real 'street' and the response has been phenomenal."

Ryan did not go to college or art school because it was "too stifling" but found a positive outlet touring with The View.

He now works from Dundee's indie studio The Doghouse.

He said: "I grew up with the guys in The View and when they started the band I went with them.

"It was an absolute blast and in-between gigs I'd sit and draw.

"The guys really believed in my art and they used it for all their releases.

"They've supported me and encouraged me and now others are getting into it too.

Touring with the band allowed me to meet a lot of other musicians, such as Pete Doherty, Mel C, Lily Allen, Dirty Pretty Things and The Pigeon Detectives. It's opened up a whole new world for me."

Ryan was arrested last year in Birmingham while hanging out with troubled Babyshambles singer Doherty.

The rocker was held on suspicion of stealing a car and being in possession of drugs. He and Ryan were cleared.

Ryan said: "Pete gets picked on because of who he is. But I still got into trouble from my mum."

Last night, Richie Cumming, Educational Co-ordinator for Dundee Contemporary Arts Centre, praised Ryan's work.

He said: "While most people don't understand or appreciate graffiti because it can be destructive, some of it does have a strong social message and artistic merit.

"Man has scribbled on walls going back to the stone age. It's refreshing to see Ryan pursuing this as a positive career and we wish him success."

Ryan's shoes and clothes cost between £30 and £100 and you can see his work on his website, www.ryanmcphail.co.uk

    VIEW'S INJURY SCARE

THE View's bass player Kieran Webster has smashed his hand in a mystery accident., It means he won't be picking up his guitar for a few weeks after the incident in Dundee earlier this week., Luckily, the band are having a break for a few weeks in their home city so it won't affect their touring schedule, but they had hoped to do some work on their new album., A spokesman for The View said: "Yes, Kieran has smashed his hand although we can't give details beyond that so we couldn't say how he did it or how badly damaged it is.

"The band are on holiday for six weeks and not gigging at the moment so no shows have to be cancelled."

He refused to comment on suggestions the 20-year-old injured himself by punching a wall during an argument.

Last week Kieran was involved in a drunken scuffle with one of The View's management team following the Mercury Music Awards.

Security staff had to intervene when fists flew between the bassist and Robin Wynn Evans at the bash in London.

The View were nominated for their album Hats Off To The Buskers but were beaten to the award by Klaxons.

Kieran and his bandmates Kyle Falconer, Peter Reilly and Steven Morrison are notorious for their wild antics. Last month they caused £5000 worth of damage at a designer store opening when they sprayed bottles of champagne over designer handbags.

And at T in the Park in July, boozy Kieran nearly missed their headline slot on Saturday night when he was almost run over.

He staggered and fell in front of a car driven by XFM DJ Scott Shaw, which had to make an emergency stop to avoid crushing him.

On the same weekend the band gate crashed a wedding reception at their hotel in Stirlingshire with singer Kyle being frog marched to bed in the early hours by staff.

The View nominated for a Q Award

Jonathan Ross abused everyone. Arctic Monkeys called Take That “bollocks”. Liam Gallagher went to the zoo instead. And that was just last year’s Q Awards. This year’s ceremony – in partnership with O2 and Sony Ericsson – will be held at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel on 8 October and promises to be even more star studded. And you’re in charge.

The View along with The Enemy, The Pigeon Detectives and The Klaxons have been nominated for the award of Best New Act.

  • The View Dismiss Led Zeppelin Renunion

THE VIEW frontman KYLE FALCONER has urged rock veterans LED ZEPPELIN to refrain from their rumoured reunion, because ROBERT PLANET "can't sing any more".

The seventies band are rumoured to be reuniting 27 years after they split.
Scottish group The View were huge fans of the original Led Zeppelin music and want the Whole Lotta Love stars to stay in the past.

Falconer says, "It's going to be s**t. The guy can't sing any more at all. I saw him on Later...With Jools Holland (British music TV show) and it was the most awful screaming I've ever heard in my life. I'll be avoiding it like the plague."

    Prize Fighters

The View's Kieren and band boss in drunken brawl after award bash

THE View's bassist Kieren Webster had to be pulled apart from one of the band's management team during a drunken scrap at the Mercury Music Awards.

Security staff intervened when fists started to fly between Kieren and Robin Wynn Evans. They were separated, but no one knows what sparked the punch-up.

The band, who played their track Superstar Tradesman at the opening of the awards do, admitted they were going to get drunk when they spoke to the Razz earlier in the evening.

Yesterday, a spokesman for the group said: "There was drinking and emotional behaviour that night. It was down to drunken high jinx."

Before the fracas, guitarist Peter Reilly said: "Thankfully we went on first, otherwise we'd be that hammered we would have cocked it up."

Earlier they told us how they are going back to their roots to work on their second album.

The boys are going to spend two weeks holed up in a rehearsal room in their home city of Dundee in a bid to repeat the success of Mercury nominated Hats Off To The Buskers.

Lead singer Kyle Falconer has moved to London since the band exploded on to the music scene.

He said: "We have been so busy we haven't had time to rehearse our new songs. They are all written and we have acoustic recordings, but we have to make the album.

"There are some cracking tunes but I would say that because I write them.

"We were struggling trying to write on the tour bus but now we are going back to Dundee to a rehearsal room and can't wait to get on with it."

It looks like the boys' love lives are also impacting on their work plans.

Peter said: "Two of us have girlfriends in Scotland and two of us down south, so we are going to be doing two weeks in Dundee and two weeks in England,

"We're going to have to see if that works but I think most of the work will get done in Dundee. We'll probably look at getting the album out early next year."

The band have still to finalise who will produce the record but they know who they want.

Owen Morris, the man behind Oasis and The View's last CD, is in the running but nothing has been signed.

"The album's title and producer is top secret," said Peter.

"We haven't reached any decisions, but Owen's name is being mentioned."

    The View at The Mercurys's

Scots rockers THE VIEW scuttled out of the Mercury awards ceremony half way through to trudge a quarter of a mile to the nearest supermarket, where they stocked up on bottle of vodka.

Guitarist PETE REILLY meanwhile had some words to say about the nominations list.

He told me: "I'm really surprised The Enemy didn't get a nomination. I'd have really liked to have seen them here."

    Another Album Review

From residencies in grubby Dundee pubs to the front pages of the music mags, and more importantly still, 3 top 20 hit singles in what’s been an explosive year for Kyle Falconer and the boys. In addition to the continual radio bombardment the band have maintained their Rock n’ roll street cred and column inches, with regular skirmishes with the law, hotel operators, and have toured with Babyshambles (always a guarantee for news worthiness). They mesmerize audiences with a mixture of electrifying presence, unreserved levels of energy, and some decent tunes. And so, to a debut album that promises to replicate the live shows, a chance to indulge in one of 2007’s bright new hopes, and to share a piece of these street urchins, for as former Stone Rose and Primal Scream bass player Mani says, “They’re a bunch of cheeky monkeys, and I love that, it reminds me of me when I was their age”.

Producer Owen Morris has worked wonders. He’s done nothing to shape their music, just scooped the four into the studio and pressed the record button. The band basically just step up and perform their live set and frankly that’s what captures the essence of The View. There’s no need to enhance the sound with studio trickery, overdubs etc. One take and out works perfectly, even down to the coughing at the end of “Don’t Tell Me”. To get the full effect of their tempestuous energy the stomping opener “Coming Down” hits you like a cyclone, whips you up and spews you back out in just over two minutes. There’s a Libertines post punk charm that raises the level of adrenalin, and the singles “Superstar Tradesman” and “Wasted Little DJ’s” continually manage to charge those levels with rabid vigour. If there is a reservation, it’s “Face For The Radio” which sounds too Kooksian and pedestrian in comparison to the enlivened sounds they achieve elsewhere, and the quality begins to wane towards the end with some unconvincing Ska rehashes. But as debut albums go, this one has enough joie de vivre, cocky bravado and raw spirit to burn a hole in your heart, and remind everyone that when The View next come to town, follow the beer trail and make sure you see them. Lets hope they don’t burn out like their mentors.

These Pub Rockers sparkle with a radiance that nearly every band in Britain will never aspire to, and although there’s nothing fundamentally new here, “Hats Off To The Buskers” is ballsy, raw and fun.
