The Sun Leeds Festival Review

THE VIEW – The Pumpkins may have been the best band of the weekend, but The View were certainly the most energetic.

Bouncing around even more than their loyal fans, Kyle and Kieren ended their super summer in style.

Playing the last set of the last night, they saved their best songs ‘til last too – ending with the knockout punches of Squeeze cover Up The Junction, Same Jeans and Superstar Tradesman.

They said this was their last gig for a while. We suspect they'll use that free time to catch up some sleep.

Killer tune: Superstar Tradesman
Bizarre rating: 9/10

A Poor View of Amy Winehouse

THE View's Kieren Webster isn't really an Amy Winehouse fan by the sounds of things.

Amy has been in a bit of a state recently after quitting rehab and living in a haze of drink and drugs with hubby Blake Fielder-Civil.

Kieren, bass player with the Dundee band, said: "I don't know Amy Winehouse and I don't really want to after I saw the nick of her the other day."

Kieren was chatting after the band played at Reading Festival following a performance in Edinburgh on Friday for T on the Fringe.

But he admitted he and the band sometimes get into a bit of a state. Kieren said: "This white T-shirt belongs to our lead singer Kyle Falconer, but I ruined it on Friday night.

"It's got cider and blackcurrant stains on it. We had a good night. "We were up playing a stadium gig with the Kaiser Chiefs up in Scotland and it was pretty cool.

"I feel pretty rough but I feel pretty rough all the time at gigs. None of us have been to sleep yet but we are ready to carry on and do the gig tonight. I drink cider and Kyle can get through a whole crate of beer."

And his mum has given up on trying to get him to behave. He said: "My mum leaves me to it now. She's fed up trying to stop me."

Reading Festival Videos

The View close second day on NME/ Radio 1 stage

The View headlined the second night (August 25) of the Carling Weekend: Reading Festival taking top billing on the NME/ Radio 1 Stage.

Completing a remarkable 12 months that has included a Number One album, the Shockwaves NME Awards Tour and a Mercury Prize nomination, the band returned to the event having played on the Carling Stage last year.

Dropping in debut single 'Wasted Little DJs' early on they quickly repeated the chaotic scenes of their set last year.

With a Scottish St Andrews Cross being waved proudly in front of the stage, it didn't take long for noisy "The View, The View are on fire" chants to start echoing around the tent.

With the likes of 'Don't Tell Me' and 'Wastelands' in the set the hardcore View fans continued to go wild and with the band playing a short acoustic interlude with single 'Face For The Radio' they generated the band's first real sing-a-long of the night.

Although the tent had noticeably begun to thin out 'Same Jeans' shook those who were left into life, with plenty of foot stamping, hand clapping and singing ringing through the night air.

The band then finished things off in similar fashion with 'Superstar Tradesman' supplying a loud climax to the festival's second day.

Nice bag . . . shame about The View

DESIGNERS at Prada and Luis Vuitton would be tearing their hair out if they saw their bags being soaked by a Scots rock band.

But thankfully for The View, management at the new Mulberry store on Ingram Street didn't mind the Dundee band's champagne exploits.

The rockers shook a fizzed-up bottle and ended up spraying it over designer handbags and guests at the shop opening in Glasgow.

At least five bags were splashed, however management laughed it off as "the most rock 'n' roll launch we've ever done", despite an estimated £5000 worth of damage.

One lucky customer who managed to get her hands on a dry handbag was Iona Wallace, left, from the West End.

Councillor Liz Cameron, chairwoman of Culture and Sport Glasgow, was also one of the party-goers at the opening.

She said: "The bags are to die for. I can look in the window and dream."

Store manager Nic Harbottle said: "The store is doing phenomenally well."

    Videos from Lowlands Festival

    Wasteful Little DJ's

SCOTS rockers The View caused £5000 worth of damage at a designer store last night when they burst open bottles of champagne.

The Wasted Little DJs band were special guests at Mulberry's new flagship store in Glasgow's city centre.

The Dundee boys' unique DJ set at the opening party went down well - but things went slightly pear-shaped during a break.

A photographer handed them a bottle of champagne to pose with, then watched in horror as the boys shook the fizzed-up bottle and spilt its contents over designer handbags.

The Moet Brut Imperial Champagne ended up being splashed over at least five of the Bayswater bags, as well as some of the worried bystanders, including Razz girl Bev.

The boys, who by this point had downed plenty of cocktails, continued unabashed with their DJ set.

Thankfully store staff, who had also invited former Lord Provost of Glasgow Liz Cameron and Dressed To Kilt organiser Dr Geoffrey Carroll, didn't appear to be too fazed by the incident.

A spokesperson from Mulberry said: "Over £5000 worth of bags were damaged but The View are one of the hottest bands in the UK right now.

"Effectively this is the most rock 'n' roll launch party we've ever done as a company.

"It's where Mulberry is going. We are a young, cool and edgy brand and the bag situation will have to be dealt with by us."

An onlooker added: "At £800 for a handbag, you would expect it to be waterproof."

The View continued to party on until the shop closed at 9.30pm.

Their spokesperson said: "They wanted a rock 'n' roll band. If a photographer gives them a bottle of champagne, what do they expect them to do with it?"

The guys had flown in after their set at Belfast's Tennent's Vital festival but their busy schedule didn't leave them too tired to party.

Band members Pete Reilly and Kieren Webster turned up shortly after 7pm to perform their set.

The boys played tracks like Nightclub by The Specials and White Man In Hammersmith Palace by The Clash.

The View win over thousands at gig

Scottish rockers The View have electrified an audience of thousands during a gig in Belfast.

The Dundee quartet were one of the leading names at this year's Tennents Vital festival in the city's Ormeau Park.

Hits including Face For The Radio and Same Jeans delighted fans at the sixth annual event.

Vocalist Kyle Falconer mesmerised the crowd with a string of high-energy renditions.

Dressed in a checked shirt and sporting a mop of long curly black hair, he kept the crowds entertained throughout the 50-minute set.

The group first came to prominence last August when Wasted Little DJs made No 15 in the UK's singles chart.

They are currently touring to promote their album Hats Off To The Buskers, which was nominated for this year's Mercury Music Award.

The boys from The View allegedly stole a golf cart at the Lowlands
festival. The ride ended in Elburg. One of the bandmembers supposedly
fell out of the cart during the ride.

The View were naughty and allegedly stole a golf cart. 3fm's
interviewer Lois used one of them to cross around the festival site.
Those carts are fun things, so it's no surprise that The View stole
    it.

How the band returned to their hotel or tour bus is being investigated

THE VIEW have told how they jumped at the chance to pay tribute to their musical heroes.

The Dundee wild boys are covering a Libertines classic for an album celebrating 40 years of Radio 1.

And when The View were allocated 2003, they jumped at the chance to take on Don't Look Back Into The Sun.

Bassist Kieren Webster said: "It was easy for us to pick the Libertines as that is one of our favourite songs. We play it at singalongs a lot.

"It was the anthem for our summer when we were just starting out, doing a gig every few weeks because we were working.

"It was a great summer so it has a lot of good memories for us all."

The View were daunted at the prospect of taking on a song with such meaning for them but their confidence soared when one Libertine joined them in the studio.

Kieren said: "Carl Barat likes our version - we know that because he played guitar on it for us.

"It was nerve-wracking having him there but it gave us a boost to know he approved of us doing it enough to be involved. We recorded it at the same studio the Libertines used, with the same producer.

"I think it is a good version. Obviously it will never be as good as the original but we weren't trying to better; we just wanted to have fun and pay tribute to it. The fear of messing it up was definitely there."

Radio 1: Established 1967, out on October 1, also features covers from fellow Scots KT Tunstall, Calvin Harris, Franz Ferdinand and The Fratellis, plus Robbie Williams, Foo Fighters, Kylie and The Enemy.

Kieren admits he and bandmates Peter Reilly, Kyle Falconer and Steven Morrison, would love to think young groups were covering View songs in the way they started out doing the Libertines classic.

He said: "When we were 14 we were a covers band so I'd love to be in a pub in Dundee and hear a young band do one of our songs. That would be pretty cool."

The View Show They Have Bags of Talent

SCOTS band The View are going to be let loose to DJ in a Scots designer handbag shop next week.

Kieren Webster, Kyle Falconer, Peter Reilly and Steven Morrison have notched up a reputation for their outrageous antics on and off stage. Now they are set to create even more havoc at the opening of designer store Mulberry.

The stunning new store in Glasgow will attract well known faces around town and a smattering of good old rock and rollers at the bash on August 22.

But it will be The View that will cause the most commotion. The boys have a packed tour diary at the moment, with forthcoming dates in Austria, Belgium and the Netherlands in addition to appearances at the Reading and Leeds festivals later in the month.

Their DJ stint follows a successful set at last weekend's Live at Loch Lomond Festival and will see the boys fly in fresh from their concert date in Belfast.

Mary McGowne, party organiser, said: "The View are one of the UK's hottest bands right now and it is a major coup to have them DJing on the night.

    Daily Record, 15th August 2007

The View tipped for Mercury shock

An organisation working to nurture Scots bands believes Dundee group The View could spring a shock and win Britain’s most prestigious contemporary music award.
Alec Downie, of New Music in Scotland, said The View’s Nationwide Mercury Prize nomination is a “massive achievement that puts them in a very small, exclusive club of respected artists”.
The band has been shortlisted for their number-one selling debut album Hats Off To The Buskers, and will go head-to-head with Arctic Monkeys and Amy Winehouse for the £20,000 prize.

William Hill have made Hats Off To The Buskers outsiders at 16/1 with Amy Winehouse 2/1 favourite, but Mr Downie believes The View could leave the experts with egg on their faces.

“The Mercury Awards began in 1992 as an independent alternative to the Brit Awards and subsequently have become nearly as big an event as the Brits in terms of Press, media coverage and exposure, however they have been able to retain some of their indie cool by consistently nominating albums that have artistic credibility as opposed to sales figures,” he said.

“Gaining a nomination is as much a compliment to The View’s artistic status as their commercial success or talent and to have one so early on in their career is a massive achievement that puts them in a very small, exclusive club of respected artists.

“The View have shown they have the ability to write good songs that have captured the imagination of a generation of youth in the way Oasis or The Libertines did before them and, more importantly, whilst comparisons will be made to their predecessors, they have done so with a sound that is fresh, modern and captivating.

“People have been trying to second guess the Mercury panel for years and in general they end up with copious amounts of egg on their face. Any nomination stands a chance and each of the 12 nominees have differing strengths or appeal and a look at the history of the event shows the odd curve ball being fired in.

“So why not give it to a bunch of kids from Dundee that know how to truly rip it up in the best traditions of rock n roll?”

As well as being a huge honour, the nomination should also provide a major boost to sales of Hats Off To The Buskers, particularly if they win the award at the ceremony in September.

    Album Review by Music-Critic, Canada

Within the city of Dundee lies the district of Dryburgh, home to Kyle Falconer, Kieren Webster, Peter Reilly, and Steven Morrison of The View – a Scottish indie rock band who have released their debut album, Hats Off to the Buskers. From acknowledging the limitations of their hometown, to drunken nights out and romance, Hats Off chiefly deals with life in Dundee. And while the lyrical content offers little surprise from this relatively young, high-energy band, it certainly does not detract from their overall musical appeal.

The great thing about their blatant youthfulness is that the album does not drag at all. From their declaration of averting those who tried to stop their dreams in ‘Comin’ Down’ to the closing sea shanty ‘Typical Time,’ the listener is rewarded with the delights of engaging rhythms, a nearly live sound, and unsuspecting time changes; the latter being best demonstrated in their third single, ‘Same Jeans.’

‘Skag Trendy’ possesses such a catchy riff that, coupled with Webster’s distinct Dundonian accent, makes it difficult to recognise the strong bit of social commentary on addiction and homelessness in the lyrics, though the comparisons to the Libertines are probably best highlighted here in this tale of “a young man looking for some variation” dealing with the resulting “complete and utter social deterioration.” Their only acoustic song, ‘Face for the Radio,’ gives the audience a break from the raw fast pace of the album. It also does well to show off Falconer’s vocals while proving that the View can step up to broaden their depth in the future.

All things said and done, Hats Off to the Buskers is bristling with exuberance and addictive choruses. After being short-listed for the 2007 Nationwide Mercury Prize, the View have successfully shown what their local fan base has been chanting for quite some time - “the View are on fire.”
